NEW YORK, October 19, 2003 - The 45 King AKA Mark Howard James passed away today at the age of 62. He was a DJ and Producer specializing in Breakbeats and most famous for “The 900 Number” which gained fame for being the theme to the Ed Lover Dance on Yo! MTV Raps in the early 90’s.
President Aaron Fuchs stated “Sadly, this most masterful maker of beats didn’t make it out of the coma he’d long been in. The too young passing of this warm, witty, talented man is truly a gut punch.”
Tuff City issued many titles from the Bronx born, Jersey bred Breakbeat legend including Master of the Game, 45 Kingdom, Grooves For A Quiet Storm, the Lost Breakbeat series, the Breakmania series, The 45 King Presents the Flavor Unit among many other releases. His production and remix credits include Queen Latifah, Lakim Shabazz, Grandmaster Caz, Spoonie Gee and The Cold Crush Brothers. In terms of titles issued, The 45 King was the most prolific artist on the label.
The 45 King features prominently on the upcoming RSD Black Friday 4-Volume Tuff City Salutes Hip Hop’s 50th series: on the DJ’s volume he is on a bonus single with a remix of “The 900 Number” by Ced Gee. He also has production credits on the MC Crews volume with The Flavor Unit and The Female MC’s volume with Queen Latifah. Lastly, he remixed Grandmaster Caz on the Solo MC’s volume.
