Spanish boom bap triumvirate Grupo HNE (pronounced Henny) is back with a new single this morning. "Dope Sick" is a lowrider soul-influenced dose of hip-hop instrumental with verses from Grupo HNE's DJ Exes as well as guests DeeSoulopez & Str8 Paper. As Exes says of the track, "The metaphor is that our lifelong love of hip-hop is as strong a habit as an addiction to substances. For those who experience the high of making music like we do, it's a high you want to have in your life all the time.
"Dope Sick" is available now on Spotify and is the group's third released single. Grupo HNE consists of producer DJ Heron, multi-instrumentalist Nando (percussion, keyboards, vocals) and DJ Exes, who rhymes.
Originally from Brooklyn, DJ Heron cut his teeth in the early days of Miami's DJ culture. Over the decades, he has worked with / DJ'd for artists such as De La Soul, Mobb Deep, Smoke DZA, KRS-ONE, The Lox and many more. Most recently, he released a full-length remix album of LoLife General Thirstin Howl The 3rd classic material entitled Thirstin On Heron.
Spending his formative years between New Jersey and Miami, DJ Exes is an integral member of the LoLife Miami family. In addition to creating one of the area's first boom-bap morning shows on Blaze 104.7, he spun at events all over the city. As an emcee, he formed German Regime with DeeSoulLopez and released two albums. More recently, his Salsa Breaks series of mixtapes were instrumental in the creation of Thirstin Howl's hip-hop musical Don Chicharron.
Nando has a long and extensive relationship with music, including playing drum lines throughout his teenage years. Through his brother, he eventually met DJ Exes and played live drums for a remix of a German Regime track. Continuing this relationship, Exes introduced Nando to Thirstin Howl The 3rd, who made him a part of his live performances, playing congas as well as appearing on various tracks by him and the LoLife Miami family members.
