The Cavendish Archive and Soul Mates Records are pleased to announce 'Cavendish Reimagined: Amerigo Gazaway Edition' - a sun-drenched, soulful collection of golden age hip-hop sampled entirely from 60s and 70s records from the Boosey & Hawkes and Cavendish Music archives. Produced and performed by Amerigo Gazaway of Soul Mates Records, with additional rap performances from a range of lyricists including Napoleon Da Legend, Dillon and Awon.
Listen to the lead single 'The Great Escape (feat. Napoleon Da Legend)', pre-order the digital/CD and stay tuned for the full album, which drops 6/7/24.
"As a record collector and hip-hop producer, I've always had a special affinity for library and production music from the 60s and 70s (especially the Boosey & Hawkes collection that many of us DJs and sample hunters have become familiar with on our digging expeditions). While most library records were originally made with the intention of being used in film soundtracks, commercials and TV, they have also become an endless source of inspiration and sample material for some of hip-hop's greatest producers and crate diggers.
Library music holds a special place in my heart because I believe it often possesses a level of artistic freedom, musicianship and experimental quality rarely found in other more traditional forms of music. These were players and artists who were not trying to create pop radio 'hits', but rather to enhance the overall emotional and narrative elements of the stories being told on screen.
So when Cavendish Music approached me to see if I wanted to delve into their vast catalogue, it was like a producer's dream come true and an offer I couldn't refuse. To make things more interesting, I challenged myself to write original rap lyrics for each track and enlisted a handful of my favourite emcees and collaborators to join me on the ride. I hope you enjoy the results!
