ATAK returns with Smile When They Flash Their Knives

About Smile When They Flash Their Knives

The Smile When They Flash Their Knives album began first as a cool name, then an interesting concept, then a long phone call with the LA-based producer Deeskee, and then finally as a batch of friendly emails to a bunch of artists who had been down with ATAK since its earliest days. Surprisingly quickly, the list of contributing rappers and producers became a dream-come-true track list for serious fans of underground and independent hip hop: Z-Man, Tommy V, Sacred Hoop, Roughneck Jihad, Rase (FTA), Neila, Megabusive, Meanest Man Contest, Jason the Argonaut, Gel Roc, EVS, eightarrow, doseone, Deeskee, Bad Shane and Awol One. Motivated by a simple desire to be excellent, this crew has crafted eight songs chock full of magic, love, pain, bombast and boom bap. This album is available on cassette and vinyl via ATAK/Pretty Good Music, with a Canadian cassette version via Hand’Solo Records and a European cassette version via Pen Thief Records, and will be streaming on all major services.

About ATAK

ATAK was born in San Francisco in 1996 to help breathe life into an underrepresented community, the underground hip hop scene, and expose the world to amazing music from a  lot of amazing people. Starting with a handful of Bay Area cassette tapes from the likes of Sacred Hoop, 99th Demention, Mystic Journeymen and San Francisco Street Music (SFSM), ATAK began amassing a mail-order catalog (and eventually an online store) featuring artists from all over California, all over the US, all over Canada and all over the world, carrying some of the earliest works from many soon-to-be international superstars such as the Living Legends crew, Zion-I, anticon, DJ Z-Trip, Hobo Junction, Buck 65, Sixtoo, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis and Atmosphere.
